Home Improvements

Before any owner begins a home improvement project that change or alter a unit, please review the Association's Governing Documents (especially Section 5.7 of the Bylaws and Policy Resolution #5 - Design Review Guidelines & Procedures) to ensure the improvements are allowed and proper procedures are followed. Below are some highlights of the rules and lessons learned.

Hours Permitted for Construction
Construction is permitted only during these hours:

  • 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. on weekdays (except holidays)
  • 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on weekends

Construction is not permitted on holidays or during hours outside those specified above.

Be sure to review the Association's Governing Documents (and lease agreement if you are a tenant) before beginning any work in the unit. Below are some highlights of the restrictions.

Be sure to review the Association's Governing Documents (and lease agreement if you are a tenant) before beginning any work in the unit. Below are some highlights of the restrictions.

  • The Covenants Committee is responsible for reviewing all improvements that require approval.
  • Submit a Design Review Application to the Covenants Committee c/o Windsor Plaza management office at 1045 N. Utah Street., Arlington, VA
  • No exterior alterations or additions may be made without prior approval.
  • All improvements must meet local building and zoning codes.
  • New hardwood flooring or floor coverings other than carpeting must be approved prior to installation.
  • Painting, wallpapering, and decorating within a unit do not require approval.
  • Electrical or plumbing changes that would affect another unit or the common area must be approved.
  • Combination of units or the subdivision of a unit requires Board approval.

Restrictions and Procedures after Receiving Approval or Confirmation to Proceed [top]
Once you have received written approval or confirmed that the improvement is allowed, be sure to adhere to the restrictions and procedures during the project. Below are some highlights:

  • The elevator and loading dock must be reserved in advance.
  • Unit owners are responsible for arranging contractor access to the unit during the hours permitted.
  • Owners are responsible for any damage to the elevator or other common areas caused by the contractors.

Some Lessons Learned [top]

  • Hire a reputable and established company that is licensed and insured. Ask for a copy of the company's license and insurance to make sure they are current.
  • Alert your neighbors in advance and explain the timetable.
  • Reserve the elevator and loading dock in advance.
